Cheap USB Flash Drives Verses Portable Hard Drives
We live in an age where external mass storage devices are becoming more and more popular as society is moving into a new era of technology, whereby the ability to easily move our data around is becoming a necessity.
Portable hard drives are among some of the most sought after digital paraphernalia around. As an affordable, compact, sturdy, quick and versatile device, they are often bought to compliment an internal hard drive, or to back up important data.
A portable hard drive is especially useful for businessmen and women, students and artists who create high density data on their computers (film makers, graphic designers and 3D modellers come to mind.)
Most external hard drives plug directly into the USB port of your computer, and due to the nature of USB 2.0 outputs, mean that these devices are able to work incredibly quickly and efficiently.
The data storage size of an external hard drive ranges from as small as one hundred and sixty gigabytes, to as mammoth as four terabytes (that’s four thousand gigabytes!) Physically speaking, most portable hard drives are the size of a large novel, and weigh in at around two to five kilograms each.
Expect to pay anywhere from one hundred to five hundred dollars for a portable hard drive, depending on the brand, type, and storage space you require.
One the other extreme of external mass storage devices is the USB flash drive. Sometimes referred simply as a ‘USB stick’ or a ‘thumb drive,’ these units provide a reasonable amount of data storage packed away in something that is usually no bigger than your finger.
A USB flash drive is popular amongst students and businessmen and women due to their incredibly small size, which means they can easily take their digital work around with them attached to their keychain or lanyard. Similarly, these devices are very affordable – cheap USB flash drives are some of the biggest sellers from online technology and gadgetry stores! I’ve seen some of these units going for as little as ten dollars each.
A typical USB flash drive will contain anywhere from one hundred and twenty eight megabytes of storage space, up to anywhere including sixty four gigabytes and beyond. They are also very durable, usually contained in hard plastic – one professional model, however, is encased in steel! Just try to break that one!
As a college student, I used both an external hard drive to store my large graphic design files, and a cheap USB flash drive to easily move around document files for assessment et cet era. I don’t think I could possibly have passed my degree without the use of the devices!
So, if you are in need of an external mass storage device, why not consider the purchase of an portable hard drive if you have the cash, or a cheap USB flash drive if you only need a small amount of storage space. Both have their pros and cons, but I’m sure you will benefit from both.
